Mountain Dew Candy Canes

Mountain Dew Candy Canes

See how to make these homemade Mountain Dew Candy Canes.  Mountain Dew is an ingredient I use often in recipes.  I find it to be a challenge to come up with different desserts to use Mountain Dew in.  Sometimes the dish I make might sound strange but often the taste is better than I expect.

Since Christmas is fast approaching I decided to make homemade candy canes.  Making these candy canes into Mountain Dew candy canes doesn't take much more effort.  I did have to make a Mountain Dew syrup for flavoring but that only involves reducing some Mountain Dew soda in a pot.

The Process

Making homemade candy canes requires a candy thermometer, food safe gloves and some silicone mats but other than that, you will probably have everything else you need.  Candy canes are essentially just hard candy so making them is very similar to making hard candy.

The main ingredients are sugar, water, corn syrup, cream of tarter and flavoring.  Food coloring is optional but if you are going to go through the effort of making them you should at least make them look cool.

This recipe does require working with very hot ingredients so it’s best to leave this to adults.  Getting hard candy on your skin when it’s still at a liquid stage will be very painful and can cause permanent damage.  Safe practices is highly recommended.

Part of making these candy canes involves folding hot candy that has just entered the solid state.  I used winter gloves that were covered by food safe gloves.  Without this it would be too hot to work with.  I also preheated my oven to 200 degree F.  This is where I keep my candy while not working with it.
