Pumpkin Cake for Halloween

October is here and Halloween is on the way!  This means that I get to make some fun and exciting creations in the kitchen.  After trying to figure out what to make for my first Halloween treat of the season, I decided on a pumpkin cake.  This was not just any pumpkin cake, but a pumpkin cake with a creative design on the inside.

Ingredients:
  • 2 boxes white cake mix (plus ingredients called for on box)
  • Orange, green and black food coloring
  • Fondant - Orange, black and green
  • 2 teaspoons butter
  • 2 pinches of flour
  • frosting

Tools:
  • Bundt cake pan
  • cutting tool or butter knife for fondant
  • cake leveler

Directions:
  1. Start by preparing 1 box of cake mix according to the instructions.
  2. Divide into 3 separate bowls.
  3. Add food coloring to each bowl.
  4. Prepare a bundt cake pan by lining it with butter and then a small amount of flour.
  5. spoon batter into bundt cake pan in a random pattern until all batter is used
  6. bake in oven at 350 for 39-43 minutes
  7. allow to cool completely and repeat steps 1-6 with second box of cake mix.
  8. Using a cake leveler, shave off the top of each cake so that the cakes will join in the middle.
  9. Apply frosting to one of the cakes and position the other cake on top of the bottom cake and press firmly.
  10. Place in the refrigerator for about 20-30 minutes for frosting to firm up.
  11. Remove cake from refrigerator and frost the remainder of the cake.
  12. Cover the cake completely with orange fondant and cut off excess.
  13. cut out 2 small triangles and a creative pumpkin mouth shape out of black fondant.
  14. rub a small amount of water on the back of the black fondant cutouts and press firmly on the orange fondant covering the cake.
  15. shape green fondant to look like a pumpkin stem and add a little water and place on top of orange cake.

That’s it!  Now just serve up the festive goodness.
