Star Wars | BB-8 Cake

Star War The Force Awakens is now in the movie theaters after a long wait.  Fans from all over the world are thrilled to see the movie.  I am no exception, the movie has me excited as well.  One of the newest things that I am excited to see is the new droid “BB-8”.  Move over R2-D2, BB-8 appears to be the modern version of you.  Now I haven't got a chance to see the movie yet but I hope it lives up to the hype.

In celebration of the movie and my new favorite droid, I decided to make a BB-8 cake.

Here is what you will need.

Cake Ingredients:
     - 2 1/2 cups sugar
     - 1 cup softened butter
     - 7 eggs
     - 6 tablespoons cornstarch
     - 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
     - 1 cup heavy whipping cream
     - 2 tablespoons vanilla extract

Marshmallow fondant ingredients:
     - 10.5 oz mini marshmallows
     - 2 tablespoons water
     - 4-5 cups confectionary sugar
     - food coloring (orange, grey and black)

Buttercream frosting ingredients:
     - 1 cup softened butter
     - 3-4 cups confectionary sugar
     - 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
     - 1-2 tablespoons milk

Directions:
  1. Start by blending sugar and butter in a large bowl until well combined.  Slowly add eggs one at a time blending completely before adding the next one.  (Wet Mixture)
  2. In a separate bowl combine flour and cornstarch.  (Dry Mixture)
  3. Add half of the dry mixture to the wet mixture and blend well.  Next, add heavy whipping cream and vanilla extract.  Then, add the remainder of the dry mixture.
  4. Grease and flour the 3D sports ball pans.  Fill 4/5 the way with batter.  Fill the half circle silicone baking try with some batter as well for the head of BB-8.  Bake at 350 for 1 hour 20 minutes or until a wooden skewer inserted comes out clean.  Only 30-40 minutes for BB-8’s head.  Let cool completely.
  5. Trim excess cake level with the pan.  Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30-60 minutes.
  6. Make buttercream frosting by blending confectionary sugar with butter slowly until it reaches your desired consistency.  Add milk and vanilla extract about half way through adding the confectionary sugar.
  7. Remove from refrigerator and cut a small part off one of the half circle cakes to make it flat.  Apply a small amount of frosting to hold the cake to the try.  Apply more frosting to the top of the cake.  Position the other half circle cake on top of the first one.  Cover the whole cake with frosting.
  8. Make the Marshmallow fondant by adding water to the marshmallows and microwaving on high for 30 seconds at a time until melted.  Stir in between sessions.  Add confectionary sugar and knead until it reaches the consistency you require.
  9. Roll out the fondant to about 1/8 inch and cover the cake.  Also cover the small head portion of the cake with fondant.  Attach the head to the body with wooden dowels.
  10. Roll and cutout the other fondant’s into pieces that replicate BB-8’s features.  Attach the cutout fondant to the cake using a little water.

That is it.  It is a bit time consuming but well worth the time.  If you have someone in your life that loves Star Wars, please share this with them on Facebook, Twitter or any social media.
