What’s in a name?
Well, when you are talking about Fried BeaverTails, the name really drums up images of something so different from the actual treat. What are fried beavertails? A Fried beavertail is a fried dough treat that is enjoyed mostly in Canada. They can be covered in a wide array of different toppings. Of course no actual beaver is used in the making of fried beavertails.
Recently, someone suggested that I made fried beavertails for my Youtube channel. I have never had an official fried beavertail since they originate from Ottawa, Cananda and I have never gotten the opportunity to visit.
Usually when I recreate a recipe I have tried the finished product before. So this was a first for me. But I am always up for a challenge. Now, I don’t know if my version of fried beavertails taste exactly like the official ones but they do taste good.
Here is what you will need to make these:
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 5 teaspoons dry yeast
- pinch of sugar
- 1 cup warm milk
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 large eggs
- 1/3 cup oil
- 4-5 cups flour
- sugar and cinnamon for coating
Directions:
- In a large bowl add the warm water. Then add yeast and a pinch of sugar. Stir a little and let sit until it foams up (about 5 minutes).
- Now add sugar, salt, vanilla extract, eggs, warm milk and oil. Mix until well combined.
- Slowly mix in flour until it is next to impossible to mix with a spoon.
- Turn out dough onto a floured surface and kneed.
- When the dough is no longer sticky to the touch, add some oil to a bowl and place the dough in and cover. Let sit until it doubles in size (45 minutes).
- Release air from the dough. Pinch off about 2 inches of the dough and roll out into flat oval pieces. Keep dough covered while rolling out the pieces.
- In a pot, bring oil to temperature. Drop in 2 beavertails in at a time. After 1 minute, flip. Drain on paper towels.
- While the beavertails are still warm, place in a plastic bag filled with cinnamon and sugar. Shake until well covered.
- Dress it up with chocolate and bananas or any topping of your choice.
I hope you enjoyed this recipe and decide to make it for yourself. If you would like to see step-by-step how I made these, watch here:
