No Bake Gingerbread House

Baking and Christmas go hand and hand.  While I love baking, sometimes I want to include treats that are not baking into my batch of goodies.

One of the best parts of Christmas is decorating a gingerbread house.  I love decorating these houses but I don’t enjoy baking and measuring gingerbread  as much.  How can you have one without the other?  You could buy a pre-made gingerbread house kit but that is no fun.  How about making a gingerbread house that doesn’t have gingerbread in it at all?

That is what I did this year.

Ingredients:
  Royal icing
  • 2 large egg whites
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 5 cups confectionary sugar

   House
  • 2 packs of large pretzel rods
  • 6 graham crackers
  • Red, green and yellow candy melts
  • Sprinkles
  • assortment of candy and sweets

Directions:
  1. Start by lining up 16 pretzel rods on some wax paper.  Cut the top 8 rods into a peak.  Apply royal icing in-between each rod.  Flip and add support to the back of the structure.    Repeat for back of the house.
  2. Line up 8 rods and cut off 1 inch from each.  Apply royal icing in-between each rod.  Flip and add support to the back of the structure.  Repeat for other side wall.
  3. Apply icing to serving dish and to the inside of each structure.  Assemble by starting with front and two sides then assemble the back.  Add 1 pretzel rod to the top overhanging a bit.
  4. Add graham crackers as the roof.  Cover with icing.
  5. Melt candy melts and paint every other rod a different color.  (use a new paintbrush)
  6. Decorate the house using an assortment of different candy.
