Ornament Cake

Christmas baking is a fun activity that is just as much about spending time with family in the kitchen as it is about what is being baked.  I enjoy making new things every year as well as the traditional baked goods.

Ornaments are usually found on the tree and not on the dessert table but this year you can find them in both places with this ornament cake.

Here is what you will need:

Ingredients:
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/3 cup corn starch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 7 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for pan)
  • 2 tablespoons flour (for pan)
  • buttercream frosting
  • food coloring
  • Pull n Peel Twizzlers
  • sprinkles

Directions:
  1. Start by combining flour, corn starch and salt in a large bowl.
  2. In a medium bowl blend sugar and butter.  Add vanilla and add eggs one at a time as you blend.
  3. Combine half of the dry mixture to the wet and add 1/2 cup of heavy cream.  Add the remainder of the dry mixture and the other 1/2 cup of heavy cream and mix.
  4. Apply butter to the inside of the ball pans and coat with flour.  Add batter to the pans and bake at 350 degrees for 40-60 minutes.
  5. Use remaining mix for cupcakes but only bake for 15-20 minutes.
  6. Let cool.  Cut level and join the 2 balls together with frosting.  Cut crown off of the cupcake and add to the top of the large cake.  The cover with frosting as crumb coat.  Refrigerate 30-60 minutes then apply final coat.
  7. Add sprinkle to the frosting.  Add a looped Twizzler as the ornament handle.
